Recruiting of Business Majors?

Do big oil companies like Exxon Mobil recruit heavily from the business school?

Bump bump bump

SMU Cox’s BBA Admission director would be able to answer your question. His name is Jim Bryan and his email is jnbryan@smu.edu

Great question! I am actually pursuing a job in the energy industry right now. SMU has a lot of connections to the energy industry, but as far as recruiting like at job fairs on campus its relatively low. HOWEVER, this isnt a bad thing at all. The SMU Energy club and concerntration are great ways to get connected to the energy world. Once part of the club you will sit down with the director and he will guide you on how to connected to the energy industry. This is better, because you actually get connected with great starting positions opposed to mediocre beginning jobs.

Definitly start early, by joining the energy club and go to all their networking events. Last week, the energy club paid for us to stay in Oklahoma City and then we visited 4 firms looking to recruit students. It was great way see different parts of the energy industry and network.

Some things I wish I would have done early:
-double major or minor in: Geology, Mechanical or Electrical enginneering. (the energy industry generally hires more undergraduates this way and then most of them go back to school for MBA)
-start the energy concentration early
-go to all the energy club events
-do an energy research project

The key to the industry is to show you have true passion for it.

The energy industry is hard to get the foot in the door, but once your in the opportunities are endless.

@dallaskid Just an update, because you were asking about ExxonMobil. Thought I share with you that I just recieved and email about networking event with SMU Alums that work at ExxonMobil this Thursday that I am going to attend. This just an example of the time of recuiting SMU does opposed to just sending in resume to a college fair recruiter.

SMU Cox does have a great reputation with big oil, but as a business major I believe focusing on banks such as J.P. Morgan and Barclays, etc… for oil and gas is where Cox truly shines. Few do OCR but most of these jobs are landed through networking.
