Recruitment via Linkedin

Has anyone been or had their offspring recruited for a job via their Linkedin profile?
Is there anything they should be aware of or on the lookout for?

I know a guy who gets Linkedin messages from recruiters at least once a month. He always responds even though he is not currently looking to switch jobs, but he usually does some googling around to see if the recruiting firm is legit (so far so good, according to him). If he knows a candidate who might be interested in the position that is being recruited for, he tells the recruiter to contact that person via LinkedIn.

My DH says its quite reasonable and appropriate (I am paraphrasing, but thats the gist of it)

What if any advantage would they have applying through a recruiter versus applying for the job directly? From the info given my S is pretty sure he knows what company is hiring and the opening is listed on their website.

It really depends. Sometimes, companies prefer to fill a position via a trusted recruiter. Sometimes, recruiters find ads and pretend to work for the company. Your son needs to do some additional googling to figure out what the real story is. Does your son have any connections who can lead him to the HM directly? That would be the best route.

oh- thanks for the clarification, BB. DH was speaking of recruiters he knew. Not cold calls. That said, that has worked for some.

It is fairly easy to find out if the position has been advertised by the company itself. Just take the key phrases out of the recruiter’s message… Sort of transform Google into your own Turnitin. ;)

Usually, co’s do not use recruiters for lower level positions. Why pay someone when he resumes are pouring in? However, if they want to lure a candidate from, let’s say, a competitor or have someone specific in mind (e.g., a person with very unique skill set), then a recruiter can be deployed.

If it is a small co without their own HR department to screen candidates, it is possible that the recruiter performs that function for them.

Or look up the company on linked in. Sometimes its there.

Jym and Bunsenburner- thank you both. He isn’t really looking. I am not sure what relationship the recruiter has with the company. My S is pretty sure of the company due to clues the recruiter mentioned. If it is the company he thinks the position is listed on both Linkedin and the company website. It is a company he would consider working for but in the meantime he is very happy with his present job and feels he still has things to learn from his present job.
The position isn’t entry level but it isn’t high level either. It does require specific skills and S is qualified for the job. The company is known to take a long time to fill open positions.
