Is it possible for the Adcom at Yale to overlook a B in spanish 1 (taken frosh yr) because of an A in spanish 2 and a 5 on an AP spanish test.

Are there certain classes I can take at my local university to make myself look good? Should I take an advanced math class versus a psychology class?

If rank is important in the admission process, what’s a good range?

B in Spanish is OK. I’d take 4 years of math instad of psych. Any academic classes at local university will look good. How high your class rank needs to be depends on the school you attend. For a school with no track record with top schools and a not-terribly-rigorous curriculum, you’ll need to be top 5% absent something special. For competitive publics and privates with good track records, top 10% would likely have a shot if the rest of the application looks good. For the top publics and privates in the country that are feeder schools (to the extent that concept really exists any more), you might be able to stretch your rank out as far as top 20%, perhaps ever farther with special circumstances for all I know.

The above is just my speculation, but it is clear that the strength of your test scores and ECs impact how high your class rank must be as does the quality of your high school.
