Redeeming the GPA-dashed hopes

Hi. I graduated in May of 2012 with 3.11 GPA. Poor, I know. My highest SAT score was a 2010, scoring in the 99th percentile in both Reading and Writing. I also scored an 11 out of 12 on the graded essay. I have an extensive history with extracurricular activities and Student Government and have received glowing letters of recommendation from several members of my high school’s faculty. I am desperate to get out of my state, and am looking to study for a degree in English paired with a degree in either Religion Studies or Psychology. My question, are there any Universities (either on the East Coast or in the Midwest) with a strong extracurricular presence, that are liberal (politically), and near a large city that will take me? I am currently considering applying to the University of Chicago and Furman University (North Carolina).

Thank you very much for your help and consideration,

U Chicago is perhaps a poor choice…

You have a great shot at Furman, though.

Your stats are extremely low for University of Chicago, but they value the essay much more then most colleges, if your essay is amazing you will have a shot, though it will still be a high reach. Sorry I can’t speak to Furman.

Agree with Cartia, Furman and if I may add Vanderbilt, I know SAT 1 might be a problem.
