Redoing the Application After Getting Denied Fee Waiver--Good or Bad Idea?

Hey all,

I went to submit my fee waiver for the UC application and it was denied. I was confused about this because I’m an independent student who doesn’t make much money. I went back and looked and saw that I had accidentally checked the box saying “Can this student be claimed as a dependent?”. I tried to fix it, but it continued to say denied. Without submitting the application, I went back and started a new one, making it absolutely identical to the other but with the fixed checked box. I got the fee waiver and submitted. Did I do the right thing or did I completely just f*** myself up? Thanks!

I would call the UC admissions phone number on Monday, and ask them if you’re good. We can all speculate, but only they can tell you for sure.

@aepaige Since the first application was never submitted, I assume only the second (last one) went through. Did you get an immediate response email that the second one was submitted? You should get the verifying email right away. (Did you get a previous email saying the earlier version was received? It sounds like you didn’t.)

All you have to do is go to the UC log-in site and click on the application PDF. It will show what was submitted. If it’s only showing the one submitted, I can’t see why there would be a problem. BTW, you should save it as well on your computer, just so you have it.

@lindyk8 I didn’t submit the first one. I created an entirely new account with a different email to make sure they were completely separate. I did get the confirmation e-mail for the second account when I submitted it, but didn’t go as far as clicking submit for the first denied one. I saw the fee waiver had been declined and closed the window without going any further.

However, according to Yahoo Answers–which we all know is 1000% reliable–the first, unsubmitted account will be deleted after the filing period closes. That feels right to me, as I can’t see why they’d hold on to them after November 30th, but I don’t know for certain.

Also, I printed and saved my application, but thank you for letting me know I should do that.

We can only imagine how many thousands upon thousands of applications are started and not finished. Bottom line, it was never submitted, merely a work in progress, so you’re good to go. There’s no way they’re processing an unsubmitted application.

@lindyk8 That’s what I was thinking. I just didn’t want them to run a search on my SSN and find this unfinished application with a denied fee waiver. Call me paranoid, but I’ve been through some things, lol.

Well for your peace of mind, contact them. You don’t want sleepless nights.

Haha. Thanks. I appreciate it, @lindyk8.

@aepaige How’d it go? Did they fix it or did you submit the second one and get approved?

For what it’s worth, they have a TON of applications and information to go through. I really don’t think that they would take any time to look through any unsubmitted applications.

@cf9882 The fee waiver was approved the second time around. For extra safety, I deleted all of my information out of the original application.
