Reevaluation for Cal Grant?

This year’s Fafsa was a nightmare. My mom sold our business a couple weeks before filing for FAFSA, so our assets went through the roof. This made me ineligible for any Cal Grants. My mom sold her business because she simply could not handle the physical strain of working, and since then she is unable to work and has filed for disability. As a result we make either about what the poverty line is or below it. Cal Grant was out of the picture, so we contacted UCLA because we thought the snapshot nature of FAFSA was unfair and assumed they could help us out. They managed to get my EFC changed from like 17k to 6.8k, and gave us a generous package. When I had called the California Student Aid Commission, the answer of reanalysis was unclear and it didn’t matter because I called too late this year and apparently funds were gone.

Though, this following year, our income will be reported as the sale of the business (130k) plus anything my dad makes. I know UCLA will disregard the business sale and create a new profile and give us aid, but my question is if it is possible to get a reevaluation for possible cal grants? I know when I file my FAFSA, I will have to put the 130k+ whatever, but I was wondering if whoever handles the Cal Grants could listen to my situation and reevaluate my package? Has anyone done that?

Well, there is this web site here…

http://www.calgrants.org/</a></p>

And this web site here…

http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?id=1165</a></p>

On the second web site there is an area which speaks of income limits and it is called income and ceiling tables and from the nature of your posts your family is way beyond the limits.

And on the second area of the second web site there is this url…

http://www.csac.ca.gov/doc.asp?ID=543</a></p>

and that gives you some really official seeming folks and departments with whom you could speak.

This web site right here…

http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/student_guide/2005-2006/english/states-numbers.htm</a></p>

lists a fair amount of higher education agencies in the US and that would even give you more folks to call and or e mail

Good luck to you. Sit down with your folks and really prepare things and try to see what happens because you never know. I no longer live in So Cal, but the only thing I know is that you never know when it comes to schooling! You guys do need to start thinking of a humble minded backup plan after you try to obtain assistance with your Cal Grant issue because you do not want to be out of the loop with schooling, right? You need to figure out a backup plan on top of the other stuff.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained, but you may run into Cal Grants just not having more money for next year at this point. They aren’t able to award grants to everyone who qualifies as it is. Do be sure to apply again next year and make sure your college sends in your gpa (my daughter’s didn’t do it automatically, you had to ask them to).

Thanks for the replies, merlin and my.

Merlin, I was already aware of the ceiling limits and assets limits because I was already rejected. There is no real backup plan because I don’t need one. At the very least, I am guarenteed some money from UCLA, but I want to make sure I can get all that is possible to attain. I actually called the csac, and thats where I got my dodgy answers. I will call again when the time to fill out fafsa is near.

My, Cal grants lack the money now :(. I called about getting my cal grant reevaluated, but they said I had to be a high school student for it to matter. I had my mom call and argue our situation a little bit better, but they said they dont have any money, so it doesnt matter how hard we argue. My mom got the impression that they COULD reevaluate our sitaution, but due to a lack of sources, they didnt say they could with 100% certainty.

I was just trying to find people who were able to get their cal grants reevaluated. Thanks alot for the replies!
