So I got selected as a candidate for the Regents’ at Berkeley but got rejected from UCLA. Is that unheard of or pretty common? Just seems weird to get accepted early into the better engineering school and denied from the other.

are you from NorCal? Looking at your stats http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/1305051-official-uc-berkeley-2016-rd-results.html#post14041260
I think first generation was an important factor. I wonder if the UCs have visibility…so like UCLA sees that you are offered Regents and you are first gen, so they are like…ok…he is taken care of, lets move on to the next deserving candidate. I think geography and ECs are more of a consideration for Berkeley than UCLA (if you are from bay area)

actually, you will find a surprising number of SoCal admits on the 29th, as Cal is looking to create a good incoming class with a wide range of backgrounds, geographies, etc.

Since both UCLA and Cal admit holistically, it can be very mysterious viewed from the outside. On decision day, you sometimes see people with astounding stats, perfect SATs and extremely high GPA, all the right sounding stuff, but rejected. As well, you will see reports from those who were rejected but someone way down the ranking list in their HS is accepted. Although high stats help, it is not a stats only school.

No sharing or coordinated admissions. You will see plenty of UCLA and UCB joint acceptances, plenty of UCLA yes and Cal no, and plenty of Cal yes but UCLA no.

That is unfortunate. Where does that leave the high achieving kids from CA, who can’t really afford private? I know applicants are looked at “in the context” of your family background/school. But kids from “supposedly affluent” backgrounds also have their own set of challenges like the kids from lower performing schools.

Last year, guy from my school (CA) got accepted to Cornell, but rejected Cal and UCLA. He said he had worked too hard and did not want Davis…(you know the prestige thing…whatever that is worth). Finally parents took a loan for Cornell.

Exactly. I didn’t bother applying to high ranked private or out of state schools because I couldn’t afford it. However, my parents still make a lot of money but it’s just not practical for me. I have really good stats but I’m afraid of being rejected from Cal.

I heard CAL is trying to get more “middle-class” kids in.

This is frustrating as a CA tax payer. I know some parents are going to the lengths of transferring to ‘lower performing’ districts…v sad.

To add to that…they get the low/middle income CA kids and then to offset that, they get the rich OOS kids. Dang…I guess I need to do more next year. We are not high income but (not considered middle/low either) Cal has been my dream school…and to think that a high gpa/sat/community service/summer ATDP programs still may not get me in…that is crazy. Now I think I will try to get college level summer courses…there…maybe do more community service…(get my essays reviewed to make sure…it is my voice…)…who knows !!
