Regional Stuff

Are small regional awards worth mentioning on college applications? Like 3rd place in regional debate contest, honorable mention in science fair, or winner of county essay competition? I seem to have several of these and I’m not sure whether it would just waste up space on an application or actually help me.

Also, what about regional camps? I went to one last summer and it was selective but it was only regional. Should I look into other summer camps to attend this year or is it okay to stick to this one since it’s a day camp and a lot cheaper than overnight camps. Oh, and by camp, I mean like math camp or science camp.

Last thing that doesn’t really have to do with the topic: does it hurt to have a lot of writing EC’s but have an intended major of Economics or something. Basically what I’m asking is if dedication towards a certain activity (such as writing) is going to help out no matter what because it shows dedication, or if it will only help out if I want to major in something related to writing.

Bump?
anyone?

I think all of the things you mentioned are positives, and should be included. Speaking as someone who doesn’t have many awards (regional or otherwise), or camps (regional or otherwise), or writing EC’s. Awards show that you stand out from others and are generally better than them at whatever subject or area the competition was in (this will make you stand out in applications). Selective camps are good. and think of writing ec’s just like any other ec or sport; just because you’re majoring in political science doesn’t mean you can’t include that you’re a state champion swimmer. In your applications you should give the reader a sense of who you are. If these things have helped to define you, then you should include them.

If your regional awards are significant/competitive, you might also consider adding a brief qualifier to put them into context (e.g. “ABC Competition 1st place - out of 2300 participants”)

Of course, if the award actually isn’t that competitive–say, only six people entered–then feel free to leave that part out.

Btw, I’m a writer too :slight_smile: Woooo writers represent!

of course. OP, you’ve been spending too much time on CC

@stressedouttt
I was actually wondering this because a friend of my sister said she didn’t even mention regional science fair in her appliction even though she’s been twice. Therefore, I was kind of curious if other people put small regional stuff like that on their appliction.
