Registering a car in Maryland?

Has anyone had to register a car (that was currently registered in another state) in the state of Maryland? I’m getting conflicting info on what it is I need to do. This is a new car (gift for grad), that has a lien on it. Right now it is registered in my name only and, depending upon how the insurance works out, may stay that way.

First you need to get insurance for it. You probably will have to get a Maryland broker to provide it. I did as they would not do it from my state. You then need to get the paperwork from the MV website, get permission to transfer the lien from the lender and provide a notarized statement of the exchange.

^^^Thanks for your response. This gives me a good starting point.

Back in 1986, right after college graduation, H bought a car in NJ. A few weeks later he moved to Maryland for a job. Since the car was still new he was required to pay a surcharge on it with the Maryland registration. The charge equalled the sales tax he would have paid if he originally made the purchase in Md.

I’m not kidding. He had to pay “sales tax” in Maryland on a car he bought in NJ. Of course it wasn’t called sales tax, but the computation was equal to sales tax. In his case an extra $500 +/-.

23 years have passed, so I don’t know if this charge still exists. You might want to check it out, though. I’ve lived here my whole life and never heard of this state reducing fees or taxes.

Thanks, DougBetsy.
