For the first semester. Not as alternate for each other… as separate requests.

Also, on the register screen on Penn InTouch, I see where you enter a class that you’re requesting, and then space for an alternate. How many requests can you make, in general? Just four if you want 4 c.u. or do you put more just in case your alternates don’t work out?

Haha sorry. Just kinda confused.

If you want to be in X writing seminar and Y freshman seminar, you request them as two separate requests. An alternate is like “If I don’t get writing seminar X I would like to try for writing seminar Y”. You can take a writing seminar and freshman seminar first semester. Many people do.

If you are limited to 4cus, it places you into the first 4 cus you request. If you have 10 requests, it cuts you off after it puts you into 4 courses. Generally you’re not going to get a writing seminar or freshman seminar if it’s not one of your first choices, but you might as well try.
