registering for classes

So I don’t have orientation until August 18 which is the last orientation date…does this mean I’m gonna be screwed when registering for classes???
A lot of my classes are going to be sophomore standing classes too, would they even have spots open that late?
I’m reallllly worried about this

You’ll still have spots in the big gen ed classes, but i would forget about the sophomore classes if I were you. Your only chance is that during the first 2 weeks of school a lot of people drop classes, so check the registration page a few times a day. They’ll show you the registration page and how to use it at orientation. I got shafted too because I was out of the country for pretty much all of the orientation times but the last day and I got into all the classes I wanted by registering during the first 2 weeks of class and dropping the ones I didn’t want. Hope that helps.

Oh, and your other chance is to email the professor and state your case for why you want their class. Some will open up a space for someone who is interrested enough to contact them. This method has only worked for me when I already knew the professor, though.

Question abaout summer oreintation/registration–how do you get your date to register–are they assigned randomly or by some sort of plan (surely not alphabetical but by college, adviser.etc?). I have heard some other students complaining about their late dates and worrying about courses being closed. As a prehistoric (to my kids) mom, I remember getting up at 3AM to sit in a hall till 8 am to register (all via 3x5 size forms!) for the next term–things have certainly changed in 3 decades!

After you have accepted admission as a freshman, you are sent info on summer orientation. There are several two day orientation sessions throughout the late spring and summer. You send in the form giving your choice of session – you usually choose two or three different options and then they tell you one you get. The earlier you get the form in the better your chance of getting your choice of dates. At the end of the orientation session that you attend at UIUC, you register (via computer). Those who go to earlier sessions have more of a chance of getting classes they want than those that go later.

Second semester freshman and all upper classman register for classes for the fall semester in April and thus some classes will even be closed by the time the first new freshman registers.

During first week and a half of classes a lot of drop and add goes on as students try to change to classes they could not get during registration. Going August 18 to register means it likely that some of the courses you want will be full or the only remaining time you can get for it is 8 a.m.

i’ve got the same problem. my admission packet didnt get to me until the final day of the Communications College’s transfer student orientation/registration program, so i couldnt attend. it will either mean getting used to taking naps (8 am classes are rough), overloading other semesters to compensate for a loss of necessary classes the first go-around, or spending an extra semester in school to get what is needed to graduate.

i’ve heard not to get your hopes up, getting spots you need will be hard. I have also heard contacting the professor helps sometimes though.

If you already know people at U of I who have registration access, you could ask to see if his/her schedule is already full. If it’s not, then that person can register for the class you want to get into, and hold onto it until you actually register. However, students who register for a class that they’ve already passed will be automatically kicked out of the class after a certain period of time.

I got screwed out of some classes, especially in the English side of things. Can’t take speech/rhet during the fall semester and the times suck too. I got stuck with 3-4 days I believe where I have to have classes starting at 8 am.

and i went there june 22nd.

In other words, good luck.

I’m pretty sure they told us that the way they decided on who takes rhetoric in spring or fall was very simple. They went by the last didgit in your ID number. If you’re odd, you take it in the Fall I believe. If you’re even you take your rhetoric course in the Spring. Or was it the other way around???

yea, i was supposed to take speech in the fall b/c my last digit is an odd # i believe, but when i was tryin to register for it, it was all full, so i couldn’t get it. Now i gotta wait till either the spring or sophomore yr. to take that. And obviosuly, u gotta take Rhet during freshman year for sure. I don’t wanna be taking 2 english classes the same semester and didn’t want to have to take Speech sophomore year, that’s why I was kinda ****ed about not getting a Speech class.

I’m happy to not be taking an english class this semester! lets see what I have… aviation, air force rotc, african history, math, science… yeahhh no complaints here :D
