Registering for classes

To be honest, I havent really looked over anything concerning my schedule next year. I figured I’ll have to take most of the general requirements anyway, so I won’t have to worry about getting closed out of a class. My first questions is: will there be someone to help pick out my schedule at orientation. And second: Is there any possible way I can register for my classes before orientation so there isn’t the possibility of being shut out of some of the classes i want to take. I think someone else mentioned earlier that being closed out of a class is unlikely, but getting the desirable time for the class is difficult. Is that true?

yes 2. no 3. yes (only for writing sections really that everyone needs to take)

also (and this is for everyone) remember that you’ll only have a crappy schedule for 1 semester out of 8. this isn’t going to be your schedule forever.

more concerned with getting the right teachers, not so much times

I have to say - going to that orientation, scheduling classes were really hard as classes finished up very very fast! I was session 1 too! I ended up not trying to pick the best teachers, but in the end I had to pick based on time =(. I hope that my teachers are ok.

I can’t imagine what it will be like for later orientations (i am Engineering so things differ). I would also try to looks at a possible schedule now. Just to see whats open and look at what teacher is good and what teacher is horrible. The entire selection process is described very well though. They give you nice sheets to fill out to plan before making your decisions. Even the inevitable decisions are not final… you can still change it

When do we get assigned our student advisors? Is there a way to contact them early? The website states that transfer registration is from July 29-31; there is no mention of registration during the last orientation session.

You don’t get your advisor til you get to Orientation. You’ll register during the last Orientation session just like everyone else. It will be on that Friday of the session.

Hi. I’m an incoming freshman to Boston University and I signed for the end of July orientation. I’m really worried that there won’t be any more classes left as I have just checked the classes and a number of them have only 5-20 spaces left. Some have 100 spaces though they may be filled up quickly too. I know that my orientation is really late and there are still three more orientations before mine. I’ll be taking general courses but I feel like a lot of them are going to be filled up. General courses usually hold a lot of people but for some reason it seems like the general courses I have looked up such as general physics 1 have only several spaces left. What should I do if by the time I get to orientation I won’t be able to take the general courses that I really need to take? I’ll really appreciate some comments of my issue! Thanks!

Casandra

Cassandra: Yes, classes are filling up quickly! I just went to the orientation this past week, and some were already filled or getting close to it. I’m sure you’ll get something when it comes time for you to register though. You may not get your first choice or anything, but you will get put in classes no matter what. I would call them and try to schedule it over the phone, especially if you already know what you’re going to take. I’m not sure if they will actually let you do this, but there is a chance. I know some people that are going to the August orientation were saying that they would register over the phone so I think you should try that.

If I call them and ask them to change my orientation date to July 8-10, do you think there will still be spaces? I don’t know what I should do if I don’t get the right classes. I’ll be such a mess! I hope they’ll still have spaces.

casandra, if u don’t get the classes that you want (which you probably will, just not the times you want), you can always go to the professors of the classes u want on the first day of school and ask them if they will sign you into their class. it’s a bit of a pain, u need a form from the registrar’s office (881 comm ave) and have to get the prof. to sign it (which they absolutely will if there’s literal space, not the number of spaces listed on student link) and then bring it back to the registrar. and let’s say u don’t want to do this: it’s only 1 semester of classes that you’re not-so-psyched to take. look at other requirements you need either to fulfill the core/divisional studies or ur proposed major and be prepared to take those if necessary.

actually, here’s an idea. list for us the courses u want to take in the fall and what school/major you are (or if you’re undecided) and we can better help u out.

Hi angel. I’m going to CAS probably as a biochem and molecular biology major. I also want to fulfill pre-med requirements (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Calculus). For the fall, I will be required to take writing. I want to take a language, preferably Korean, and Calculus AB or BC depending on my AP exam grade. I also want to take an English course and definitely general or some advanced Biology. Thanks!

Casandra

well for pre-med req’s, u should have no problem getting into bi 107 and ch 101 since there are about 3 or 4 lectures and they always add extra spaces because there are so many freshmen pre-meds. writing also isn’t a problem because there are tons of sections. however, u probably won’t get the section you want (i got stuck with ancient rhetoric :-/). for your 4th course, i would either take a fun elective or fulfill your language requirement. btw, just so u know, many med schools require a year of calculus and won’t accept ap exam grades, so u may have to take a year of calculus to fulfill that.

I hope Korean won’t be filled before I get there =D

I realize that there’s around only 250 seats left for bi107 and 200 for ch101. Do you think there’ll be some space left for me by the time the end of July orientation comes? I realized that I really can’t go to any earlier orientation.

p.s. there’s 3 more orientations before mine.

even if the seats close out, they’ll either open up more seats by moving the class to a bigger room or open up another lecture or two. they know how many kids are required to take those courses and would never have those fully closed out before everyone registered.

is anybody seeing an error message when they click on the academic advising and courses links under the academics section of the student link? the same happens for the fitrec eligibility link.

they’re probably updating the site

Yes, no (if people could register before orientation, there would kinda be no point to going to orientation and everyone would want to do it) and yes (timing is difficult, ESPECIALLY for writing classes and some general requirement; obviously people like their classes not to early and not to late so mid-day is very popular, but it depends on what works in your schedule), just like Ali said.

I tend to think that having 8am classes freshmen year is the best time to do it since you’re used to waking up that early anyway. Junior year…wouldn’t recommend it.
