Registering for Courses

What are the chances of a student being able to get into the class despite the fact that it is already filled?

As a first semester freshmen, usually you just have to go with the flow for your first semester. Upperclassmen chose their classes back in April, so a lot are filled. However, when you are registering for future semseters, it is rather easy to make a case to a professor regarding classes. Most of the time, if you approach them in the correct way, they’re completely willing to overwrite you into the class.

What about new transfer students?

And how (and when) do you recommend approaching the professor to get squeezed into a course?

Transfers…I recommend emailing the professor. If you know for a fact you need an overwrite (like you aren’t the right class standing, or haven’t finished a prereq), then do it right before class selection. If you miss getting into the class because it is filled, do it directly after. =) Some professors will tell you to wait until you get to campus, but just put the idea/your case into their heads now.
