Registering for MAP Courses (CAS)

OK. I know that this topic has been discussed so many times before on this forum, but I still don’t understand how registering for classes Freshman year works. I’m hearing that some people are registering now for classes and that over time, spaces will be filled and it might be too late. On the other side, I hear that we register for classes at summer orientation with our advisor and that there are spaces reserved for incoming freshmen. So which side is right, cause I have absolutely no idea. How many classes make up MAP (I think that there are four divisions) and how many classes do we need to take in each division.

If someone has an answer, please feel free to respond. And don’t give me one of those “other threads have talked about it” response because I’ve checked and I am still confused.

Thanks

^^^ If you are in CAS you will register at Freshman Summer Orientation. Not all NYU schools have summer orientation however, and I believe that some of them have begun online registration. I think I saw that the LSP students are registering now, but that should not adversely affect you as a CAS student as they have their own set of core courses. It is my understanding that there are a set number of spots in each freshman level MAP class/section reserved for each orientation session so that students who attend the later sessions will not be at a disadvantage.
How many MAP courses you need to schedule for your first semester is in part dependent on whether or not you qualify for exemptions based on AP test scores.

Here is some info on AP score MAP exemptions:
ADVANCED PLACEMENT CREDIT AND THE MORSE ACADEMIC PLAN
AP Examination Grade MAP Requirement Satisfied
Biology 4, 5 Natural Science I and II
Chemistry 4, 5 Natural Science I and II
Environmental Science 4, 5 Natural Science I
Mathematics AB 4, 5 Quantitative Reasoning
Mathematics BC 4, 5 Quantitative Reasoning
Physics B 4, 5 Natural Science I and II
Physics C—Mech. and Physics C-E&M 4, 5 Natural Science I and II
Physics C—Mech. 4, 5 Natural Science I
Physics C—E&M 4, 5 Natural Science I
Statistics 4, 5 Quantitative Reasoning

Also, here are a couple of links you might find helpful:

[New York University > College of Arts and Science > MAP](NYU)

^^^Oops. Sorry the spacing didn’t transfer properly. That info is also available in the CAS bulletin if you can’t make this out.

It seems that we essentially only need to take 10 courses to fulfill the map requirements. Please correct me if I’m wrong as I’m not sure.
One course of:
Expository Writing
Quantitative Reasoning
Natural Science I
Natural Science II
Text and Ideas
Cultures and Contexts
Societies and the Social Sciences
Expressive Culture
Two courses in:
Foreign Language

Within those you can potentially be exempt (via AP or SAT II scores) from:
Quantitative Reasoning
Natural Science I
Natural Science II
Foreign Language

…I think.

Wow thank you so much. I think I’m finally starting to get it. And, correct me if I’m wrong, the placement tests during summer orientation are for those who want to be exempted from taking a course.?.? Otherwise I think I get it.

Thanks again!!

I suppose so, I’m pretty sure they aren’t required.

@heampopy: The foreign language requirement is not two courses; it is through the intermediate level of the chosen language. If you are starting from scratch that means four semesters of 4 credit language instruction or 2 semesters of 6 credit intensive language instruction. Here is what the MAP website has to say on this topic:

“To fulfill the foreign language component of the Morse Academic Plan, students in the College of Arts and Science must show or attain proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate level. Ordinarily, this is accomplished by the successful completion of two years of language study in the College, through the second semester of a regular intermediate-level language sequence. Some languages are also taught in intensive courses, allowing students to complete the equivalent of two years of study in a single year.”

Also, if you are majoring or minoring in one of the social sciences you should be able to fulfill the Societies and Social Sciences through that coursework. Similarly, if you are majoring or minoring in one of the language or literature oriented humanities and/or social sciences you should be able to fulfill the expressive culture requirement as a result of that coursework. Here is a link that lists those options (scroll down toward the bottom of the page): [New York University > College of Arts and Science > MAP](NYU)

@crodriguea: The placement exams at summer orientation are used for exemption from quantitative reasoning, for placement in the appropriate level for chemistry, biology, and/or calculus, and for exemption or placement level for foreign languages.

Ah I see, thanks!
