registration loophole?

S has orientation/registration in few weeks. While checking his uw account, he saw his schedule for early fall start and a link for registration. He clicked around and realized he could actually register for his regular fall classes. Could he get in trouble for registering before his session? Some of the classes he wanted to take are almost full so it would be great to get in while there is space available.

Interesting loophole…
I doubt they check when each person registers. Some people wake up at 5am and register on the second day of orientation to get a head start, so I doubt advisors will get him into trouble when they’re in the labs.

How does he know he can register? Did he actually sign up for a class?

I’d say go for it, and if he has to forfeit those classes for some reason, it would just be like he registers on the day of his orientation anyway.

yes he was actually able to register for the classes he wanted with the exception of math as he hadn’t submitted his ap score yet. I think he’s just worried that it is somehow unethical and could get in him in trouble. Maybe it’s like cutting in line - imagine if he gets sent to the end of registration, lol. I’m sure it’s not that big of a deal but surprised it hasn’t been mentioned by any other early fall students.

If he’s worried its unethical, perhaps he should contact FYP about it. I’m sure they’ll like to know about the loophole for the future. If they tell him to go ahead with it, then he can keep the classes. Otherwise, he can just drop them and register ‘regularly’ at orientation.

To be honest, I’m not surprised it hasn’t been mentioned by other EFS students… I’m sure they’d like the advantage of registering for classes earlier than their peers. I commend your son for bringing it up though. :)

Thanks for your replies speedsolver, he has decided to call them and see what they say…just to be on the safe side. He is hoping he will be able to keep them but it’s fine if he can’t. Would be a great advantage to doing early fall start :)

True! Perhaps I’ll see your son around campus in the next four years! :)

“He clicked around …”

When one adds a course in the schedule finder, it just pops back to the original EFS schedule. I guess you clicked on something that worked… could you be more specific?

He really can’t remember specifically how it worked, but the empty class table popped up after he did the medical part. I didn’t see it so can’t really answer and he was just getting everything prepared for his registration. He called the fyp and was told he was eligible for registration or it wouldn’t have allowed him to register. He took the UW 131 english comp class as a senior, maybe that triggered him as a returning student? He hadn’t looked at his home page for a while so doesn’t know when efs was posted, perhaps he could have registered even earlier.
However it worked, he’s grateful as he got all the classes he wanted including one previously full class that an opening just happened to appear in while he was checking the time schedule.
Told him he should go buy a lottery ticket :)

UW is a big bureaucratic school, you will not get in trouble for anything trust me, he’s still getting slim picking at classes, because in addition to sophomores, juniors, and seniors having already registering months ago, all the freshmen who have already had their orientation (most of them) have also already registered. You’re not going to get in trouble, nobody cares, trust me.

Thanks mooper, I know the UW has many more important things to worry about, lol. He just didn’t want to do anything wrong.
