Regretting College Choice

I am currently set to attend UNC-Charlotte this upcoming fall and for some reason feel that a made the wrong choice. I had other options, but the main one i turned down was App State. Can someone help me feel like I made the right choice. I am a perspective Computer Science major and since UNCC actually has a college dedicated to computing i felt like it would be better. But something about app is just making me regret my decision. Can anyone give me some reassurance or something. I’d appreciate it! Also if i got accepted in the fall and i feel like UNCC isnt for me once i get there could i go in the spring or would I have to reapply?

There is a reason why you picked UNCC. Since it has the College of Computing and Informatics, you will likely have an array of computer science options available to you. My advice is that you give it a try in the fall and see how it goes. If you don’t like it, you can always transfer. Who knows? Your experience may surprise you.

Write down all the reasons why you chose this school and check it each time you start to feel anxious. And while you are waiting for school to start, check the college catalog to find courses you are interested in, the clubs/activities to see which ones you want to check out, and do some research on the town where its located so you know what’s off campus that might be fun to do as well. Next, see if you can find a few profs in areas that interest you and check out what they are doing on the research and publication side. Then check into the study abroad options and see what kinds of things the career center has to offer by way of internships and summer jobs. Once you see how rich your freshman experience is going to be, you won’t be as worried about what it is you may have passed up elsewhere.

Did you get any special aid/scholarships at UNCC? if so, then you won’t get those if you transfer for spring. Did you get work study?

Why are you regretting your decision? UNCC has your major and a good dept for it.

What does App have for CS? What does App have that you like better? friends going there?

Normally, this is the part where I’d jump in and advertise my future university. But, I won’t, because I think you probably have made the right choice. What you’re experiencing is a phenomenon called buyer’s remorse. No matter how carefully you weighed the option’s, you’ll always wonder about what you didn’t pick.

There’s a reason you thought having a college dedicated to computing would be better, it’s because it kind of is. The CCI at UNCC is more advanced and has more funds available than the program at ASU. And they have plans so you can start earning credit towards your Master’s degree if that’s you plan. UNCC’s department is better-established - it’s the largest PhD program on their campus, App only has a handful of master’s students in CS, which should tell you something. And Charlotte isn’t a bad school. It has a really great campus and it’s in a really vibrant city.

You would have to reapply at App, but since you would have less than 20 credit hours you wouldn’t be a transfer student. Although your credits would still transfer, you’d need to send in your high school grades. If you were accepted in the fall and did decently well in your courses first semester, being accepted shouldn’t be an issue.

There’s nothing for you to do now but go to UNCC at least for your first semester. Nothing good will come from moping around regretting your choice. So get out, make friends, and get involved on campus. You may end up enjoying it there after all.

wow david that was a really awesome post and i really appreciate it. I figured the CS program at UNCC would be better for me, but i just kinda feel socially that app would of been better. I feel like it has a more involved campus and is a little more prestigious. I’m a runner and would love to run the mountains and stuff. But another thing that kinda deterred me from app was the cold, im from the beach in NC and having it around 40 degrees most of the time ur there just didnt sound doable since I love to be outside. Assuming ur a student there, what do u guys do when its that cold and does it really get that cold? Once again thanks for that post!

Prestigious overall, maybe, but not as far as CS goes. As for involvement, it is more of a commuter campus, yes, but there’s still tens of thousands of students on campus at any time, and a lot going on ([Student Organizations | UNC Charlotte](http://studentorgs.uncc.edu/)) And there will be a lot more excitement around campus when the football program starts.

I’m not a student there yet, I’m going this fall. But some of my closest friends are there, and I’ve spent a lot of time up there. This winter was rather warm, but it gets extremely cold most winters. You can look up “Appalachian State Blizzard” or “Boone Blizzard” on YouTube and find LOTS of examples.

That being said, I know a guy up there from Topsail Beach. He had a hard time adjusting at first, but he’s gotten used to it. And the mild spring and summer temperatures are absolutely wonderful. When it snows, there are still outdoor activities like skiing or snowboarding, a lot of students bring sleds.

Thanks for those points! I have kinda come to the conclusion that although app might be more “fun”, but Charlotte would probably be better as far as academics and getting a job goes for me. What sucks about app is the best time to be there your home, but i used to live near the mountains so i could probably get used to the cold again, i just dont want to haha! Also, Charlotte is close enough to the mountains that if u want to ski or snowboard in the winter you can just drive up to the mountains and not have to deal with the snow all the time. I will just have to make the best of it even though app or Charlotte was not my first choice school I just gotta do what I gotta do to get a good job once i graduate, u kind of forget the point of college after all this and with the programs Charlotte has that would allow me to get a master in 5 years for most of the programs they offer i dont think i should pass that up. Thanks again and good luck at app, maybe i’ll see u there in the spring haha!
