Rejection Letter - Ccm

Mezzomom,

What is your D’s major?

Unless you limit yourself to 3 or 4 schools total, two weeks between auditions is nearly impossible. Even then, it would take more than a little luck. My daughter did five live auditions with one two months erlier than the others and we still needed to do some last minute scrambling to avoid conflicts. We initially had BU and NEC scheduled for consecutive days, but that got broken up by another school that had absolutely no flexibility. We wound up rescheduling BU to the week before, which meant that we had to make two separate trips to Boston. It also meant that we had to leave Philadelphia around 5 PM after auditioning on Saturday to get to Boston in very sloppy weather for another audition the next morning, then return home afterward for school on Monday.

The sequence of these trips/auditions are mind boggling. Not being an avid traveler of late and not having FF miles, I’m still trying to figure out the best way to save on airfare costs. With the mention of last minute scrambling to change plans, I’m guessing everyone has to go ahead and swallow the penalty fees. Then there’s the car rentals, hotels. And trying to convince a husband why a prospective school might NOT be in the safe 6 hour drive window is another hurdle in itself. (I’m getting anguished again…)

There are enough of us who have been there and done that, and we are at your disposal with advice and options, not to mention lots of sympathy. Lugging those instruments around is hard, but having an instrument, the voice, which is so susceptible to health is another burden. It is very difficult not knowing about the prescreens, when plans have to be made for the others. The best you can do is make the list, set aside the prescreen dates (the NYC ones are set in stone, 1-2 days only for each), put the other prescreen result dates at beginning or end of weekend you can do others in the vicinity, and then you pray for weather, health, and good luck. Do not forget to clear everything with any absolutely required events at high school.

Hugs and cheer to you all. Cyber-margaritas will be served on my deck in May when this is all behind you. Lorelei

It can be a nightmare, and even if all goes well, in general it is an exhausting, angst ridden process. Do what you can in terms of remaining as philosophical and flexible about it as possible.

And just a reminder for those who might not know it’s there http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/240407-audition-tips-info.html</a></p>

We certainly couldn’t have kept 2 weeks between the February auditions. She had one in November, has 2 in January and 3 in February. The goal was to avoid March auditions. We don’t have to fly to any though. One is 5 minutes from our home and two others are within 3 hours so it’s not so bad. My D has a cold now so I’m hoping that she will get that out of way and be done with colds!

My D has a cold now, too. I have been preaching and preaching about her taking care of herself. I am so nervous about a cold during the auditions. She is taking vitamins, Vitamin C, Zinc, etc. but still got this cold. I will be a nervous wreck as it gets closer to the auditions. These high school kids are involved in so much stuff and just do not know when to stop and get enough sleep. I am always on my soap box about this! Just one more thing to worry about…

Linnlew, in case you haven’t seen it yet, you might want to read this thread about how singers can deal with colds (it’s superlong but interesting):

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/musical-theater-major/406350-vocal-health-tips-auditioneess.html</a></p>

Oy! Completely understand Linnlew. My D applied for EA at Oberlin and received the letter that they weren’t interested in auditioning her. Ouch, that hurt. She was not as devastated as I was, which is good since she is just at the beginning of this process.
Has anyone heard yet from Eastman, Indiana, CIM or Michigan?

My D just got over the latest cold. Thanks for the above link for voice care. One of the smartest moves she made this year was to decline participating in the HS Musical, it would have added much to much to an already heavy load.

On a side note I now realize that in a way we are getting off a lot easier than many of you since her major will be Music Ed. We’re lucky that we have over 6 good schools to work with all within 8 hours or less of driving distance.
I was thinking about the cost associated with all of this for us (since the college visits started late Soph year through the Audition Process) and I now realize that the 5K were putting out just to get to the end of the game here in the Spring is nothing compared to what some of you will spend. Kudos to all for helping your Kids reach their dreams.

Linnlew, my daughter is currently a sophomore music major (BA/vocal); although she was offered a BM, she opted for the BA at Otterbein, because she anticipated pursuing a double major when she started. However, next quarter, she is proposing an individualized BA, and if it is approved, she will be doing a BA in “Global Cultural Relations” (cultural emphasis in music). She still considers the music department her home base, and her primary advisor will continue to be from the music department. But performance is not her ultimate goal, so she decided to go for a course of study that combined her love of music with her political/social justice interests. She anticipates the major will be approved but fully expects that she will be asked to tweak some of the details before final approval is given.

Neumes: Yes, I have read that before. I think I am going out to buy D one of those inhaler things that she suggests. Thanks for reminding me!

MariasMom: We are waiting to hear from Indiana. An admissions lady told me that letters were going out last week if you requested a January audition. I could not remember at the time, however, we requested one in February. I don’t know when those letters are going out. Maybe I will call back and ask. D is checking the mailbox before me everyday since this is exam week and she is home early!

Just A Dad in Ohio: We have not spent that much money because I told my D why visit if you don’t know if you will even get an audition at a particular school. We did go to Cincy (darn it), Baldwin Wallace and Otterbein since they are close and some relatives took her to Northwestern last year, but that is about it. We did not spend the money going to IN and Maryland since who knows if she will even audition there. From what I have been reading…probably not! I am still in shock about how competitive every program seems to be!

MezzoMom: That is all very interesting. It is great how your D can combine all of that. I would love to see my D go to Otterbein. It is a great school and close to home and the scholarship potential look great. She does want the Bachelor of Music in Performance, however, I would like to see her double major. I really need her to get a job after graduation!

Interesting development worth sharing - DePaul gave the green light on the pre-screen CD today. Looks like a trip to Chicago will be added to the mix. brrrr. One Happy Daughter. Father thinking deep dish Pizza and a side trip tp the Shed Aquarium for the family (bye bye summer vacation)

Importantly - Same exact audio (minus the video) that was sent to Cinci. Linnlew - don’t worry everything will work out…

Just Dad…

That is great! Congrats! One step in the right direction even if it is cold! We are hanging in there and waiting!!! Trying not to worry!

I think it may have a lot to do with department need. Cincinatti is an extremely competitive school to get into

Linnlew and others whose kids got rejected from CCM: I feel your pain. For what it’s worth, they are one of the hardest schools to get admitted to for Music and Musical Theater. They get applicants from all over the US and even from many foreign countries. I do know that for some of their programs, they have less than a 10% acceptance rate.

My wife’s uncle, who was a Toney award winning composer, could have gone to any conservatory that he wanted to. He chose CCM.

Don’t feel too badly. Geting into there as a musician/drama/ theater major is akin to geting into Harvard for arts and sciences. I am sure that they have turned down a number of people that they would have loved to accept. Just do well in your career and that will be your justice.

Thanks, Taxguy!

I think my D is realizing this. She doesn’t know anyone who got an audition at CCM. She has auditions scheduled at a lot of great schools so I think she is over this one!

My Daughter and I were reflecting on all the college visits. Funny how when we thought back on CCM we realized that although difficult to get into, the student that provided the tour for the group we were in only knew one note…

me me me me.

I nearly stopped the tour to ask her “Muffy - did we drive all the way here to hear about how wonderful you are, or to learn about the school?”

It’s a true story - we wondered if she was a typical student there. Things will work out for all our kids…keeping them healthy now is the biggest concern.

Cheers
JADIO

(Egads, I’ll kick my self in the morning, but I’d say) she was just tooting her own horn… :D

OK everyone,

Get a load of this. After my post and all of the emotions regarding CCM, my Daughter got an e-mail today. It said they have “re-evaluated” her audition CD and they would like her to come audition.

Ok…we are in total shock…but very excited!!!
