We just purchased a condo out of state, as a place to stay when we vsiit our son. The previous owner did not leave a copy of the locked mailbox key. We don’t plan to use that address anyway, (want to have bills sent to our permanent address) but can I just get a locksmith to install a new lock so we can gain access when we are in town? I assume there are some sort of locks they use that the USPS can use a master key on, and we have a key that only opens our box? I tried calling the USPS and they do not answer the phone.

Thanks. I have a feeling that someone in the CC community will know this and help.

Thanks! I will give that a try.

We had that issue, and we talked to the postal service, who came over and rekeyed it. I think it was kind of expensive…$100 or so. Then the maintenance manager at the condo unit said he could have taken care of it for $30. Maybe you should call the condo management first, and they might have a cheap way to do it. I’m sure this happens all the time.

This happens to me a lot when I buy foreclosed condos. I do it the cheap way which is not going to be easy if you are out of town, but I’ll explain here for others.

Look at the type of locking mechanism it is. Even better is to be standing there when postman arrives. You have to have some tools with you to get it off.

Buy a cheap replacement at Home Depot and then wait for postman to open box again.

+1 to busdriver. When I needed this done, I had the condo management office do it. Only cost me $25…less than any locksmith would charge, and if the $100 mentioned above is representative it beats the Post Office handily as well.

The PO office rekeyed mine.

I finally reached the post office- they gave me a number to call for the local post office where the condo is and they said I had to come in and show proof I own the condo and they will rekey for $40. I will try the condo association to see if they can beat that price!

And it is going to be difficult from out of state. I don’t even want to get any mail there!
