Relationships Between College Children And Parents

Hello, I would like to learn about Relationships Between College Children And Parents.

For an essay?
Ammunition?

Or perhaps this poster is an alien…and…and…they’re trying to gather data on how to “fit in”?? wink wink nudge nudge >-)

…

No, I am not an alien. I have a child in college and I have some problems here. First of all, his GPA is not as good as I thought he could get. I don’t think he worked hard enough. Second, he only wants to intern in certain field which is too difficult for him to get an internship. He does not want to look for an internship in other fields. Nothing can motivate him. I am really worry about him.

He is a sophomore. If he does not have an internship for the summer, he will sleep all summer long.

He wanted to go to grad school before. His GPA is not getting him anywhere. The question is how other parents treat this situation.

Ok…but do you realize that your opening post was sooooo vague that it seems you expected us to be mind readers. lol

Is your son anxious? Lazy? depressed?

What is he studying?

What is the odd area that he’ll only intern for?

There are a number of kids who don’t try hard for internships because they do want the summer off. If that’s not acceptable to you, tell him either he interns, gets a job, or volunteers on a regular basis somewhere…or paint the house or clean out the garage…or do some other home chores all summer.

He should be working this summer if he does not get an internship. You are the parent and you set the expectation if he’s living in your house during the summer. FWIW we are fairly affluent and all three of my children have been full time volunteers or worked every summer since eighth grade as well as participating with their swim team. The volunteer work has given them great references and built confidence and responsibility. If you have let him lie around all summer in the past you are reaping what you sow. I would probably not allow him to come home without a job. A summer of fending for himself will do him a lot of good and might make him resolve to do what it takes to not end up in a marginal career.

I think he is a little bit lazy and depressed. He was a good student in high school and got in a very tough college. Now, he is surrounded by very smart people and he feels he is not smart enough to do what he wants to do. That is why I think he is little depressed.
