I’m 19, college sophomore, transferring to Emory, & have read different threads, but haven’t found what I’m looking for. I’m wondering if my aunt claims me on her Taxes as a qualifying relative/dependent off of her, will it affect my CSS Profile &/or FAFSA? Or will it continue to only look for my mother’s tax information for CSS Profile &/or FAFSA & assets in the case of CSS Profile?

For FAFSA and CSS Profile you are your mother or father’s dependent. Who claims you on their income tax is immaterial.

If your aunt contributes significantly to your expenses or to your mother’s expenses, one or both of you may need to indicate that unearned income in your financial aid paperwork. Print out the current FAFSA formula and work through it, and run the Net Price Calculator at Emory’s website. http://www.ifap.ed.gov/efcformulaguide/attachments/091312EFCFormulaGuide1314.pdf

So all questions pertaining to my dependency on FAFSA&CSSProfile will be regarded towards my parents no matter who claims me as a dependent off of them for tax purposes. I just want to be crystal clear, so I don’t make a mistake & unfortunately lose my grants.

Yes. Dependency for financial aid, and dependency for taxes are different. Follow the aid rules for aid, and the tax rules for taxes, and you will be fine.

However, keep in mind that for your aunt to claim you on her taxes you must be living with her half of the time and she must be providing half of your support. This is where things could get sticky because you may have to file part of her support as untaxed income which could affect your aid
