Religious essay topic?

I want to write about a very important experience I had that was religious. I was ordained a deacon of the Syrian Orthodox faith and I think I have a very interesting way to explain the event and how it affected me. I just want to know if its ok to write about a religious event and if this could be a unique and interesting topic that college essay readers would want to read.

I think it would communicate diversity in the student demographic to an admissions committee. The key thing is to keep the focus, as you said, on how it affected you - and to avoid any potentially controversial content such as criticizing other religions.

Thanks for the reply! I was not going to write anything that could be controversial but rather only about what this event has to do with my personality and character and show what kind of person I am.
