Religious Preference

Sorry if there’s already a thread concerning this.

I was just sent an email asking me to select my religious preference. (I’m an entering freshman)
I’m Catholic and have no problem admitting anything about my beliefs, but I want to know if the religious “information and communication” is as relentless as when on the SATs you check the box to allow schools to send you information in the mail. (I’m still getting it)
Is there any advantage to doing this?
Is it worth bothering?

If anyone from previous years has any insight that would be awesome.

Interesting question. I’m not sure if it impacts what things are sent to you, as I don’t remember if I ever responded to the question - I usually don’t, or to things like it.

UMD does have very active religious communities - from the dining/community building clubs/religious services for Jewish students offered through Hillel to the beautiful Catholic student center, which is an amazing place to study, reflect, meet people, etc. So this question may be an attempt to connect you to them and to the appropriate religious services (because the chapel offers so many different types of services/masses, and there are so many community churches, because even beyond mass there are clubs, there are student centers, etc. it can be a bit confusing to sort through). I personally only heard of the Catholic Student Center through word of mouth and now it’s one of my favorite “spots”. Then again I’m not too religious - if I was Catholic I probably would have heard of it earlier, with or without the university’s help.

Whether or not the e-mails are relentless, who knows. I get relentless e-mails from my major listservs (2, unfortunately haha), the honors listserv, etc. Though they are useful there are a LOT. So UMD is guilty of a bit of e-mail spam. Proceed cautiously. Though unlike the college spam, it should be fairly simple to unsubscribe to a university listserv they might add you to if you indicate your religious preference (IF they even do this).

Anyone else actually know? Haha.
