What are your thoughts on religious symbols in official seals and flags of the US? Do you think that they have cultural and historical significance that is appropriate to display, or are they a government endorsement of religion and offensive to followers of other religions (or non-religious people)?

In 2004, the ACLU threatened to take to legal action against Los Angeles County because one panel of the seal of the county contained a cross. LA County officials capitulated, and here’s what happened:

The ACLU has also threatned to take action against the seal of Redlands, CA, and there is going to be a vote in the city this November to save the seal.

Since the majority of people are christian, I see nothing wrong with it. The reason they revise it is because I bet Jewish people complained about it even though there like 1% of the US population. Maybe its the atheist, I don’t know. Its just silly. Most hispanic people who come here are all Catholics, maybe people shouldl fight back against the ACLU?

Wow…what a remark. The way I see the ACLU is that they are the watchdog and litmus test for Constitutional Civil Rights. They challenge on small issues so that insidious errosion is checked.

I think it’s more to make a statement…to say that principles apply no matter the size of the ordeal. It would be hypocritical to say that church and state should be separate, but in small situations they can be together.

the ACLU consists of a bunch of people with no lives. Seriously why do they waste their time on stuff like this…I don’t think it is seriously affecting anyone. I don’t see people going around saying that they feel like their constitutionals rights are being trampled on because they SAW a flag with a cross on it…oh no!!!

I liked the symbols the way they are. Shame they changed it. This country was found on Christian morals and ethics it should remain that way. Not saying they should discriminate other groups or be religiously intolerant but respect tradition and our faith.

We need the ACLU for certain things or we would have to watch our ass all the time, but the countless hours they spend suing county and city governments for biblical references and crosses in state seals and navity scenes is a complete waste of time and money. I am surprised they didn’t sue the Minnesota Twins for the giant swastika in the Superdome roof.

hazmat: I meant they are wasting their time and lives and they are useless when they go after stuff like this. Some stuff is important like the stuff you mentioned however when you look at the ACLU as a whole 90%+ of the stuff they do is worthless.

if people wish to view them and admire the religion that they associate with the symbol, let them

if people wish to view them and admire that we as a nation are capable of maintaining some remnants of our history, even without endorsing their original connotation, let them

if people wish to see the symbols as an inspiration to overturn the original promotion of the symbols, instead of the symbols themselves, let them

but please do not waste precious time and resources fighting meaningless battles
