We just found out that we will be relocated to Raleigh (from Pittsburgh suburb). We are going to try to be in by the time school starts next fall. I have one son going off to college next year and another son that will be a sophomore in HS.

We would like to find a nice neighborhood that isn’t full of little kids, but not all retirees. Is there such a place in the Raleigh area? My initial web research has me leaning toward Wake Forest area, but I really don’t know anything about any of the areas.

What high schools do you recommend? My son is an A/B student and is a very good baseball and basketball player so athletics is also very important to us.

Please help me narrow down the school choice so I can narrow down an area to search for houses.

Have you tried the City-data forums? They have subforums for NC and Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary. You might find some helpful people here, but that forum specializes in helping people moving to a particular area.

Raleigh is a great place to live and raise a family. I’d look at Cary and Apex in addition to the suburbs that are located within Raleigh itself. As far as high schools go, I don’t know much about the public schools in the area but St. David’s School (private) has a pretty strong reputation and is good at athletics as well.

The Chapel Hill area is nice but it is way overpriced, so I would avoid it if at all possible.

Thank you Cuse… I will look at Apex/Cary and see how far that is from where my husband’s office would be. I did see Apex high school listed as one with a good report.

I’m sorry I can’t help with the school district search (we are in foothills area). But wanted to welcome you to NC. We moved to NC in 88 from an area about an hour from Pittsburgh. You will love it here! My d. has been in Raleigh about 2 years and loves it.

Thank you all. I’m getting good leads both here and on the city-search forum, as far as how to research schools. There seem to be lots of good schools and tons of neighborhoods. I really need to narrow down what I’m looking for and take a trip down. It is a lot to digest.

I was very depressed about this whole thing (we’ve lived here 20 years), especially for my son, but I’m trying to look at positives… so for those of you that live in Raleigh - it really helps to hear you love it!
