Relocating with kids in college?

My parents moved a month after I started college. Instead of spending time with high school friends during Thanksgiving break, I had to get a ride with a student I didn’t know to a house I’d never seen. The upside was that home was now an hour and a half away instead of four hours. The downside was that I never did make any friends there.

Now S is in the same situation. He’s starting his second year of college, and H and I are retiring and moving out of state in October. The distance between home and school will increase from under an hour to around 3 1/2 hours. At least we’re moving to within 10 minutes of both families, so S is familiar with the area and has a whole herd of relatives there.

S goes to a state school, so unfortunately I’ll have to let his dad (who is remaining in-state) take the dependent tax exemption even though S will be living with us.

Marian, I’d be angry too! My family moved every few years and moved back to the US while I was in college, first to a house where I’d lived before, then for a year to New York. Then they went overseas again and moved to yet another new location in the US when I was in grad school. While it was harder to get to see my high school friends, I found that a surprising number of them also had parents who ended up moving.

My oldest son enjoyed seeing high school friends the first year of college, but after that his life really revolved around his college friends. I remember being quite surprised how little I saw of my high school best friend who attended the same college I did.
