This one looks interesting to me, though I’m not usually a fantasy reader - I’ve put the audiobook on hold but it says 9 week wait so I’m unlikely to have “read” it in time.
I was reading The best thing that can happen to a croissant by Pablo Tusset. The extremely indolent (think weed and prostitutes) reluctantly agrees to look for his brother. Some self interest here as brother funds his lifestyle. Set in Barcelona. Unfortunately not available on a Kindle.
I’m working my way through The New Spaniards by John Hooper. Basically a history of post-Franco Spain. It’s moderately interesting but puts me to sleep.
Finally I’m reading Language Duel/Duel de Lenguaje by Rosario Ferré. It’s doing double duty as language practice and the library challenge to read poetry in April. I really like the poems. Luckily they are not too difficult as the translations are quite loose. The author is Puerto Rican and did many of the translations so obviously she thought you had to make a lot of changes in English.
I’m currently reading The Sweetness of Water by Nathan Harris. Next up is Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver – both in much demand at my library, so I should hurry up (or put my Kindle on airplane mode).
I recently finished Women Talking by Miriam Toews, which we considered here as a possible book club choice. It’s intense and not for everyone (aftermath of sexual assault) – but uplifting in its own way, with a wry humor and deep humanity. I really like the author and will read more by her.
Other recent reads:
A Swim in a Pond in the Rain: In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life, by George Saunders. GS is one of my favorite authors (Lincoln in the Bardo and many, many short stories); this book is drawn from lectures he gives as part of the MFA program at S_yracuse University.
Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange. He’s the author of There, There; the new book stands alone but also updates us on characters in the previous one.
Honor by Thrity Umigar.
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk.
Happiness Falls by Angie Kim.
Wayward by Dana Spiotta.
@Mary13 and @ignatius, you are very convincing! I should be more open-minded, right? I put a hold on it, and I’m 30th in line at my library. 5 weeks wait. See you in June!
Having a pet octopus is probably not the best idea!!!
Perfect ending—love it @Mary13 !
Late to the party, but just I finished the book and popped in to say it was a delightful read! I had this book on hold at our public library and it took more than a month for it to make it to me. Loved Tova, loved Aunt Jeanne, and eventually Cameron grew on me too. I do see the June selection available at our library now, so hopefully I will be able to join all of you in a timely manner next time.
Great! (We didn’t talk about Aunt Jeanne much, but she was a hoot!)
Just stumbled on this link with list of women’s prize for fiction - winners and shortlists - from beginning -
We watched the first episode of this last night - fascinating
Note - This is different from a different but also enjoyable documentary from a year or two ago - My Octopus Teacher.
Since the well-reviewed North Woods was in the running during our last vote – and you never know if it might be a future pick! – this is to let you know that the Kindle version is $1.99 today (5/1/24):

As we’re in the midst of the Kentucky Derby, this Washington Post article caught my eye and made me think back to Horse, our April '23 book club choice. Gift link here.
Apparently this isn’t new, but it was on my FB feed this morning. So I had to post it here!
