Remember Charlie on the MTA?

“He never returned,
no, he never returned…”

I remember one of my daughters asking my H, who played the song for her when she was very young, why Charlie’s wife didn’t hand him a nickel instead of a sandwich. :)

ha hilarious, classic song

"…and his fate is still unlearned. He will ride forever 'neath the streets of Boston, he’s the man who never returned."

…isn’t it amazing that one’s memory can still have total recall for an obscure song that hasn’t been listened to for ~45years??

What a coincidence. Yesterday I was riding the T in Boston, and a woman and her young son were talking about being lost and “never getting to Nana’s house.” I said to them, “There’s a song about that, you know,” and sang a few bars. They loved it. (They also got off at Park Street, where she said she knew where she was.)

Really? Who travels without a credit card.

A person with two suitcases and $30 to their name?

I just googled it. I didn’t know it was written for a political campaign!

[Charlie on the M.T.A.](Charlie on the M.T.A.)

I’m glad that the fees have to be disclosed now. My sympathies are with the woman involved. She offered to pay for one bag and leave the other. Airlines refused on ground it was a security risk.

The passes that one now uses on the T are called “Charlie Tickets” (single line) or “Charlie Cards” (reloadable), due to the song.

I just sang it for my husband. He liked the Charlie story better than the woman with baggage problems.

When my H&D went to Boston for college tours 5 years ago and I was googling the T, I about fell over when I realized the passes were called Charlie passes! My daughter couldn’t figure out why I had that reaction!

I’m sorry for this woman’s experience, but this post must made me laugh out loud. One of my all time favorite songs.

Vote for George O’Brian!

I heard of a guy who has never borrowed a dime in his life. Paid cash for his $400K house, and I mean… CASH ($$$). I was told that he had to to get a cashier’s check because the mortgage co was not used to accepting sacks full of $$. His credit score is probably below 400 or wahtever. Nonexistent. Has no credit cards. But he is very wealthy.

Growin up in the 50s and 60s with a older brother who was a Kingston Trio nut, I think everyone in my family knew the words to that song.

Talk about bad timing for poor Charlie - if he had just gotten off the T one stop earlier…

Always fly Southwest.

^ Yes.

I imagine today’s air travel environment would be a shock to someone who hadn’t flown in five years. Last Friday (before the storm) it took 14 hours to fly from Hartford to St. Louis. No weather issues, no security issues, no flight crew issues, no bumping issues … just lousy service. (Not Southwest, obviously.)
