Hi again CC Parents! I don’t post here very much but with prom season underway I wanted to take the opportunity to share a sort of PSA post about the importance of talking to kids about DUI this time of year.
Many of you who were around two years ago remember my son’s story: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1506779-son-s-prom-night-dui-p1.html The condensed version is that my son and a group of his friends smuggled vodka into their junior prom and he ended up being arrested later that night for DUI, which in our state carries a mandatory jail sentence when there is a passenger in the car under 18. Fortunately no one was hurt, but the whole ordeal led to almost a dozen arrests of rising seniors just months before the application process.
My son came out of the process just fine, but this is something that is going to follow him (and all the others involved) for the rest of his life. If you’re sending a kid to prom this year, please sit them down and make sure they know exactly how bad an idea drinking on prom night is–or better yet, order them a limo!
