We’re remodeling our laundry room, so I get an opportunity to get my dream features.
I am asking for:
a pull-out ironing board
a rack for hanging clothes on hangars.
some type of pull-down apparatus for clothes that need to dry flat. I don’t even know what this would look like but I know I want one. Does anyone have something they love?
a counter for folding clothes.
I went back and forth about whether we need a sink and am thinking not, since it is right off the kitchen. I am thinking storage space is more important.
Any tips from those of you who have been there?
Does anyone have any brilliant ideas for those clothes that need to dry flat?
Mine is in the basement; I don’t mind that. I would like a counter, a utility/laundry sink, and a rack to hang things on hangers. I am able to keep my ironing board/iron out all the time and I like that.
^Agree with @GMTplus7 - my laundry room is right next to my kitchen and I really wish it had a sink. There are cleaning jobs that make too much of a mess in my kitchen sink and the bathroom sinks are too small.
I think a drying rack for clothes is a great idea. And don’t forget storage for detergent, cleaning products, etc.
I’m not a fan of mounted, pull-out ironing boards. You lose the utility of the broad, square end of the board. Besides, when I do iron (something I do my best to avoid), I like to do it in sight of the TV.
I tend to agree about the Laundry tub, I still have visions of putting one in. Having a folding table and storage space is also a great thing to have, I have a fold down table for folding I put in when I renovated it, and shelves as well). Good lighting is also a big plus, I have some really neat LED based dome lights that worked great.
We have our washer and dryer in our kitchen but also have a large, deep stainless steel sink with a cupboard underneath. It’s very handy–we use it for hand washing, washing things that don’t fit easily in the kitchen sink and more! I would definitely want that with my washer/dryer. Would like a pull out accordion thing where I could dry delicates flat–please let me know what you get for this.
When we redid our kitchen, the laundry room was left half redone with the hardwood floors and old cabinets. The laundry tub had been removed.
We have a front load washer and matching dryer. H eventually put in stock cabinets that were very similar in color and style to the good stuff in the kitchen.
Some cabinet depth modified on one wall and a counter put on top. Wall units above.
He made a counter to fit over the WD with cutouts for the hoses and water valves. New set tub and upper wall cabinets. There is a long rod for hanging, but no drying rack.
There is space for a hamper and a section that folding sorting hampers fit in. The ironing board hangs on the wall for storage; we iron in the kitchen or in front of the tv.
I missed that tub so much. The counters are great for folding and stacking clean laundry. Socks never end up behind the WD. Cabinets hold things that aren’t used often as well as extra TP, cereal, PT, juice, party dishes, etc.
When we did our big reno a few years ago, we did our laundry room, too. It’s on the second floor which I’ve always loved. It’s a fairly large room with a large bay window that overlooks our backyard. I have an IronAway ironing board which is great. On that same side of the room is a large folding counter with lots of storage below and a rod to hang ironing on, above. The opposite side of the room has the washer and dryer and a large laundry tub. Another large counter above the w/d and storage above that, and, of course, below the sink.
@alwaysamom - I have always thought that laundry rooms should be on the second floor. It just makes sense since the majority of the clothes, linens and towels are coming from the second floor bedrooms. A friend of mine built a new home and she has 2 - one on the first and one on the second. I would like that or a chute from the second floor that deposits the laundry into a first floor laundry room.
Your laundry room sounds perfect - especially with the bay window.
I like having a sink in the laundry room; it is great for soaking stained clothes/household items before they go in the washer. I use the sink almost every time I do laundry. We put a cabinet under the sink, which provides extra storage space. There is also have a spot for storing an ironing board in the laundry room and a small flat screen tv on one wall, so we can watch tv while ironing–it makes ironing a whole lot easier.
Second floor location is wonderful. Floor drain for ease of mind. (I’ve never not had a washing machine leak sooner or later.) I do have some electronic gizmo that is suppose to shut off the water if necessary, but I don’t trust it.
If you have front loaders pay attention to how the doors open. The designers of my machines have the doors in the way, so you have to empty the clothes into a laundry basket and slide the basket over to in front of the other machine because the doors both open in the same direction.
I redid my laundry room last year. I added some custom cabinets and built in shelves and a hanging bar. I already had a large rinse tub/sink and drying rack. Even though the laundry is located off the kitchen, I use the sink a lot. It’s great for soaking items, paint/project clean up, bathing the dog, etc.
I love my laundry room sink for hand washing, dog washing, soaking, filling mop pails.
Behind a double set of doors I have slide out wire baskets for things like single socks, and his and hers rags. (my H can’t tell the difference between a good rag and a rag for wiping bike grease)
