I recently submitted my FAFSA and quickly realized I made a critical mistake. I used my grandmother’s information on the FAFSA due to family circumstances. However, I figured out I was instead supposed to appeal for a dependency override. How would I go about removing my grandmother’s information and appealing for the override?
The dependency override comes from each college. You need to request it from the colleges.
You can go into the FAFSA and amend it… but you would need to include your parents…I think…if you don’t have an override.
Call your colleges and ask them what to do.
The best way to handle this is to leave the FAFSA as is & contact each school to ask how to file for a dependency override. If the school approves the override, the parent information that was provided will be ignored. If for some reason the override isn’t approved, the grandparent information will need to be replaced with parent information.
