Apparently, if you live in New York, your conditional approval will be pulled and no New York residents will be eligible to apply for or renew global entry going forward. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/06/nyregion/global-entry-what-to-know.html?action=click&module=News&pgtype=Homepage
^Wow, that’s something!!
Coming soon to CA and IL, I’m sure.
Well, I’m quite sure our state is really disliked by some quarters, so I suspect our state will be added as well. Glad my global entry was renewed for another 5 years and hope it continues to be valid (though don’t plan to travel at this point.)
The article I read said that NYS residents who are currently in the program will be “kicked out” at the end of the calendar year, regardless of how much time they have left. My H and I were just about to register to get ours but I expect IL will be next so we’re not going to waste the $. Sigh.
Actually it’s free (or at least the $100 is reimbursed) from a variety of credit cards as a benefit. If you folks have one of those cards, it may be worth getting the program may still be helpful.
CA, no. California took years of negotiation with the feds (starting with the Bush Admin thru the Obama Admin) to get its Real ID approved; the federal approval included the acceptable documentation to issue a Real ID.
NYS also obtained federal approval for its Real ID, but then NYS just changed the list of docs that the State would accept. However, the feds have not approved that list.
I have seen no such movement in the CA legislature to adopt the same policy as NYS.
Unless your state up and changes its law after the fact ala NYS, you have nothing to be concerned about.
Phew—HI does have Real ID and the approved docs, so I’m glad we will continue to get whatever less stress we get from Global Entry.
At this time, we are thinking of confining our travel to within my state — spend some time on our gorgeous neighbor islands and maybe go and visit more of the DC area and LA, where the kids live. No current interest in leaving the country at this time, but glad we renewed for another 5 years.
We are particularly vulnerable—H and I are both north of 60 and have asthma and I have other health issues. Getting any respiratory infection would be very bad. My kids also have chronic health conditions.
This doesn’t have anything to do with being Real ID compliant. NYS is also real ID compliant. The issue with NY is their Green Light Law, that allows undocumented people to get driver’s licenses. Not real ID compliant ones, just licenses.
A number of states have similar laws (which IMO make driving safer for everyone) and I think we should be worried that we’re next.
The states with laws allowing undocumented immigrants to obtain licenses:
CA
CO
CT
DE
HI
IL
MD
NM
NV
UT
VT
WA
DC
Yes, and no. (It’s all part of the same process.)
Nope, no other states should be worried. It’s the required documentation that is different. NYS changed their requirements.

I hope you are right @bluebayou!
