S who is 22 will be renting a car for a drive down to his best friends wedding - Ohio to North Carolina. He and GF prefer to drive rather than fly. We offered to split the cost on a car rental in lieu of him driving his 2007 Jeep Liberty.
Any tips/ suggestions/places that are best for under 25 rental in terms of fees? I called Costco and they are quoting an additional $25/day - which is actually about the same as the regular charge per day!
May be no way to get around that though. We will do whatever but figured it was worth an “ask” to the travelers here on CC. He has a good driving record with no accidents/tickets that I’m aware of!!
My 23 year old son rented a car from Hertz a couple of months ago, and they just happened to have a promo going which waived the surcharge. Make sure he keeps checking for a similar deal.
Costco seems to be the best deal around for under-25 rentals unless of course you can find a promo or coupon. Their rental rates are usually significantly less than elsewhere also. Is it possible he could drive one of your cars and you could drive the rental during that time? That would save the surcharge.
Some thought to that ^^^ but both my H and my car at the moment are sort of high in mileage. H seems to want to do the rental - I’ll present the prices to him and S and they can hash it out!! (but I know that H will not take the time to research, so…I am!)
I don’t know if it is still offered, but Hertz use to have a deal where you could add your child if you had an account and the under 25 fee was waived. I signed both my kids up at the time; they used Hertz several times each and it was easy.
My 20 yr. old son just started working for Enterprise today, driving cars. H just asked me how he got that job. I have no idea, but you might want to check Enterprise.
Our car insurance (USAA) has special deals with Hertz, Avis, Enterprise to waive the young driver fee for its members. I had researched for my son in September but he decided that he didn’t need a car at that time.
