I have had dorm insurance (CSI) for my son the last two years. He is moving off campus this year. I guess indeed to get renter’s insurance instead? Any advice, what to look put for, etc? I admit I haven’t researched this at all yet… I assumed until just seeing another thread that I’d stick with CSI.

You could ask you home insurance guy - might give you a discount.

You can still insure through CSI if your S is living off campus. We used it for the two years my D was in an apartment during college.

DD’s first apartment (after college) required renter’s insurance …including coverage in case renter caused damage to the structure. She got it online through Geico for about $150/yr.

Thanks. If I understand correctly, renters insurance will protect you if you need to leave the premises for some reason, and the dorm insurance just protects your physical assets or whatever. I think I will call and get a couple of quotes, and if renters is much more we will stick with CSI. Good point about him doing damage to structure also. I’ll have to look into that. With college students I guess you never know what will happen.

We just received a notice from D’s school that requires us to accept resident liability or enroll in renters insurance. The school suggested but did not require we enroll in $5,000 of property coverage and $25,000 of liability coverage from a firm called GradGuard.

We bought the GradGuard plan because it only cost $125 for the year and included earthquake and replacement value coverage. I called my local agent and they were $50.00 more for the year and when I checked CSI - their policy covered only property not liability. I wish the schools would just include renters insurance in the cost of living on campus.

I wonder if it’s worth my son getting insurance. I don’t think his apartment complex requires it, and his stuff is worth very little.

Busdriver, if your son has issues with his electronics, some of these insurance companies will cover it. That alone made it seem worthwhile to me. Fortunately we haven’t had any problems, but it’s nice to be protected.

We also used CSI when my son lived in an off campus town home senior year. I either called or online chatted with them and they said as long as he was a full time student…

We were very pleased with CSI when my daughter was a student and lived both on and off campus. She recently got insurance from AAA. Believe it or not, the rate was higher because she had claims on her CSI when a pipe froze and flooded her Atlanta apt during the January freeze. It was not her fault in anyway, but she had a hard time getting insurance because of the claim. Sigh…
