Renting a UHaul to drive daughter to grad school: need advice

When I had to move a few pieces of inherited furniture and about about a dozen boxes of household goods and books from Iowa to Maryland, I investigated renting a U-Haul type truck one way, a U-Haul type trailer, and having it shipped. I went with the moving company. My move was consolidated with other moves headed in the same direction, and since I didn’t need to have everything delivered by a particular date, it was even less expensive. The moving company reps can visit your daughter, look at all of her stuff, and give her a written estimate. If there is more than one company that handles moves between these two cities, she can get multiple estimates.

The suggestion of shipping with Amtrak is good too. I don’t know the cost for shipping unaccompanied packages, but description of this service should be on their website.
