I took Calculus in high school but we didn’t have APs so I was put into Calc 1 at the college I will be attending this fall (USC). The course description sounds like it’s gonna be review, in fact I’ve covered some of the Calc 2 topics that are listed in the class description. I just want to be interested in my classes, not bored out of my mind. Is my fear legitimate? Do college Calc classes go more in depth or do they have some other way of making the class more interesting? Can I petition for a higher math class?

Does USC have a math placement test that incoming freshmen can take? If so, then take it and see how well you do.

At my school a number of people in my intro calc course received a three or lower on the AP test (needed a four or five to get credit). Many students were surprised when they saw the actual material because it didn’t match what they learned in their AP Calc course and often did poorly on the tests.

Yeah I took the placement exam and got 37/40. The highest you can test into is Calc 1.

Do you know your academic adviser yet? I’d contact him and find out what the specific policy is for skipping a course. I find it hard to believe that USC wouldn’t let you place out of a course you’ve already taken.

You may also want to check into the feasibility of taking the Calculus CLEP exam. I’m not sure when the test dates are, but it sounds like a good option for someone in your situation. Be sure that USC would give you Calc I credit for taking the Calculus CLEP test.

Upon checking the USC website it appears as if they don’t offer CLEP credit.
However the website indicated that there is a way to get exempt from a course, but it will cost money

Yeah, I had heard you couldn’t CLEP out of classes at USC. I did Credit by Exam once before actually… could be an option

Try the final exams for USC Math 125:

If you can do them easily, then look into taking Math 126 or Math 127 (perhaps by the special examination policy).
