Replacing a SS card by Mail

So, in the midst of two moves and new jobs, I honestly have no clue where my social security card has ended up. I need to get a new one, and in order for me to have it by the time I leave for school in the fall, I’d need to mail it in (I wouldn’t be able to go to the office when it’s open because I’m working this summer).

Has anybody sent their application in (with the passport) by mail before? I’m a little nervous about sending the passport (as proof of identity and citizenship) by mail, but I’m going to need to card to get a job on campus, so I’m not sure I have a choice.

The other option would be to ask my mother to go during her lunch break, though since I’m technically an adult, I’m not sure if she’d be allowed to do that. I’m going to try and call and ask though.

Hold on to the passport and use it to fill out the I9 for your new job instead of a SS card then once you are employed get the new SS card by sending your passport.

If this is that important…and it sounds like it is…I would be asking for a half day off so I could go to the SS office and get this done.

Check to see if the Social Security Office will accept Express Mail from USPS. I’m pretty sure they do. You can print the label online, which saves you a little bit of money, and you also get free proof of delivery. (If you get the label at the post office, you have to pay a little extra for proof of delivery.) Online, you can schedule a free pick-up of the envelope for the next day (or later). You can also request emails be sent to you showing the status, so you’ll know when the package is delivered.

I’m always nervous sending a Passport or Birth Certificate in the mail, but I’ve never had any problem with Express Mail.

I used my passport for the I9 this summer, but the interview I have tomorrow (skype) needs a copy of the SS card (which I have from earlier in the year). I’m afraid I’ll need a physical card for the job, but I’ll ask just to make sure.

thumper-- Asking for a half-day off would involve a lot, because of where I’m working. It’d honestly be more trouble than its worth (getting somebody to cover my classes, falling a day behind in the curriculumn, etc.). I think if they are going to insist on a card, I may see if I can wait until I get off, and then time the application to when my PO box at school will be active and get it shipped directly there.

I’m honestly probably making things more complicated than they need to be, but that’s pretty par for course with me.

Thanks for all the advice!
