Reporting AP scores

Hey everyone, I’ve gotten a lot of mixed advice on the topic of reporting test scores on the common app. I know that they are self-reported, and that is kind of what makes the difference for me. My school counselor says that I should always be reporting a 3 or higher on the common app cause it shows that I passed the AP exam.

Then, I have others (like people in my community who’ve gone through college admissions) saying that I should only report scores of 4 and 5, but if an AP class aligned with my major, I should only report a 5; for example, if I got a 4 in AP CSA but wanted to be a CS major, I should not report it cause it is enough of a reason to deny me when applying to T20s. I was told that elite colleges would find some reason to deny an applicant, and that was enough.

What are your thoughts on this topic?

Check the website of each school you’re applying to. If that particular school gives credit for a score of 3 on that particular test, then report the 3. If they don’t, then don’t report it.

Generally, I think sending a 3 if the school gives credit (or higher placement) for the test is ok. BUT there are highly rejective schools were I wouldn’t do that, for example if one were OOS for Ga Tech or UNC Chapel Hill, I wouldn’t send a 3 (or lower) even though these two schools do give credit/placement for some 3s.

Generally, even highly rejective schools are looking for reasons to admit, they aren’t looking for reasons to deny. I personally don’t think a 4 would be directly responsible for a denial at many schools. With that said, I could argue both sides of the decision to send/not send a 4 in a major related area to highly rejective schools, so I leave that up to you. If you are proud of the score, send it. I would encourage you to send a 4 to all colleges on your list that aren’t highly rejective.

Most colleges allow self-reporting of the AP scores, so don’t pay to send those unless you must. If you want credit at the school you do enroll at, you will have to pay to send the official scores at that point. Good luck.
