Required class vs. awesome volunteer position

So, dilemma:

I’m currently waitlisted for an oceanography that fulfills a transfer requirement. It’s not a prerequisite for any other courses I need, and while this one is only offered once a year by one teacher there are other classes I can take instead. The downside to that is with my interest in marine biology and all things oceany, I’d love to take this class instead of some other geology class.

BUT, the local zoo just posted that they’re accepting applications for their Docent programs. Docents are volunteers but a little higher up the ladder, so to speak. They get to be more hands-on with the animals, work more closely with the guests, and do a lot of special programs and education. As a bio major with a fondness for kids and education, this is a perfect program. I’ve wanted to do this for years but I’ve never been able to. To be a part of the Docent program you have to take a class with them. Every Friday from 9 AM to 3 PM. For 12 weeks. This class also takes place only once a year.

I’m working from home right now, so that isn’t an issue. But the oceanography class is held on Fridays, right in the middle of the Docent class. I would love to do the oceanography class and I have a hard time justifying dropping a class I need. However, I may never have the availability to do the Docent training if I don’t do it now.

So between oceanography and docent training, which would you pick?

I’d just take Oceanography next year. (Unless you need that class to take a bunch of other classes).

That’s kind of what my instinct tells me too. It would be a lot easier to take it next year or replace it with another class vs. trying to do the Docent training some other time.

I’m still waiting for my application from the zoo. I am, as the cool kids say, totes excited.
