Is a parent and student (both are students) required to report to the school a change in the number of students attending college? Parent listed on FAFSA that two children would be attending school 2012-2013. One child is now maybe not going to attend after having thought would start spring 2013.

I have read that to report a child as attending they must attend at least half-time during one semester. What happens if the child does not attend this spring? I have read parent and child (the other child who is attending college) must report to the school when the child does not attend in spring. This will reduce grants. When are they required to report? Thanks.

We were asked to provide verification that our other kid was in college. It was done about now. If you receive grant money for reasons that are not accurate, you CAN be asked to repay it. Personally I would be honest and contact the school.

If you reported that 2 would be attending college and only 1 is actually attending during this school year, you do need to correct that. The part of the EFC generated by parent financial information is divided equally between the number of students in school.

Say, for instance, the parent info produced an EFC of 10,000. With one in school the parent generated part of the EFC would be 10,000 for that student. With 2 in school the parent generated part of each student’s EFC would be 5,000.
