Requirement for Fine Art Major

Do BFA student required to study in NYC / Rome for one semester? If it’s not required, what class should I take to replace ART 3102 Contemporary Rome Seminar or ART 3103 New York City Seminar, and the ART 3803 Art History: Italian Cinema or ART 3805 Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Metropolitan Studies?

I’m not a fine arts student, but here’s what I found:

“B.F.A. students may take advantage of off-campus study opportunities at AAP NYC and/or Cornell in Rome to gain added exposure to professional and global art worlds. Students should consult with their advisor to plan how their B.F.A. curriculum will coordinate with off-campus study. B.F.A. students in good standing with a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.750 or better are eligible to study at Cornell in Rome and/or AAP NYC. Students apply to Cornell in Rome and/or AAP NYC semester through a competitive process determined by the department. Meeting the minimum eligibility criteria does not guarantee acceptance into the off-campus option, and off-campus study is contingent on adequate enrollment. For additional information, meet with the off-campus study coordinator in the AAP Office of Admissions and Academic Services, 235 Sibley Dome.”

This makes it sound like it is optional and not everyone gets accepted to study off-campus. However, the requirements website also states, “B.F.A. students will complete ART 3005 and either or both of the off-campus advanced practice studios - ART 3001 - Rome Studio/ART 3003 - New York City Studio by the end of the third year,” which suggests that it IS required.

I would wait until you get assigned an academic advisor and ask them. In the meantime, you really don’t need to worry about it since it most likely wouldn’t take place until your junior year.

If you’re an admitted BFA student, we found the director of admissions for AAP to be amazing, and could answer just about any question we could come up with. My understanding is that the semester in New York or Rome was not required, but you had to meet the same requirements through study on campus.
