Requirements for Concentration/Certificate

I just got accepted, and now I’m trying to get a rough (nothing specific…yet) idea of what classes I’d like to take. If I want to Concentrate in Financial Engineering or Economics and get a Certificate in Music Performance and/or Finance, am I allowed to “kill two birds with one stone” by taking the classes required for my certificate freshman year while also using those same classes to count as fufilling my distribution requirements? Or can’t you use a class for two purposes? If you can’t, are the X number of classes required for certificates totally above and beyond the 36 (or 31 for AB) classes required for a major?

Courses taken for a major do count for distribution requirements. The only thing to be wary of is this: let’s say you take ECO 101 P/D/F and eventually decide to become an Econ Major (for which you need to have taken ECO 101 or the equivalent in AP credits). The PDF’ed ECO 101 will count for your distribution requirement, but not for your major.

For the fincance certificate, you need at least MAT 104 or equivalent placement. Just something to keep in mind.
