Research and internship opportunities for intl

Hi guys, I would like to ask a few questions for a friend (international student):

1- How accessible are UCLA’s labs and research opportunities to intl? Are they only available to U.S. citizens and permanent residents? If intl are also allowed to take part in research, how competitive is it to get an opportunity? Are you allowed to help in faculty/graduate research? Btw, my friend will most likely be studying Geography/Geology.

2- Would the career service help in finding an internship in the field of interest (i.e., Geology/Geography)? Are intl allowed to work with an F-1 visa status, supposing that the internship is a part of the curriculum (okay, I know it technically isn’t, but do you have to request a change in visa status)?

3- How good is UCLA/faculty at Geography/Geology?

Thanks a bunch.

I can’t answer all of your questions b/c I don’t know a thing about the geography department or visa status. But I can answer your question about labs and research. As long as your friend is serious about getting into a lab as an undergrad, it’ll be relatively easy. Though there are limited numbers of spots in many labs, so your friend may have to do some extensive searching for an opening. I’m also pretty sure that being an international student won’t hurt or help your friend finding an opportunity - He/she should have the same opportunity as any other student trying to find a position in a research lab.
