Research: Did I follow up too late?

This past Tuesday, I went to BMES’s Research Recruitment Forum and talked with 3 grad students? about their research. I emailed all of them on Friday morning, and one of them soon emailed back, saying that he had already offered several interviews and had no more room. Did I send these emails too late? Should I just have sent them on Tuesday or Wednesday itself?

Also, I assume it’s standard for them to not check emails on weekends? Because the other 2 haven’t replied yet.

It IS standard for students and professors to check their e-mails at least once every hour every day of the week for the whole year. Grad students tend to not get much time off (ie working through weekends in addition to summer and winter vacation).

If there is a deadline and you missed it, then you probably were too late. If not, there isn’t really a definition of “too late” or “too early.” Ask around and you’ll find yourself some sort of research position (most likely some sort of lab technician job at the beginning).

I don’t think there was a deadline, just that lots of people followed up earlier than I did.

So if they usually check emails during weekends, should I be worried that they haven’t replied yet?

Okay, one of the other 2 responded, and I got an interview. What should I be doing to prepare? What should I bring?

Read some papers from the lab you’re trying to work in. Try to get a basic understanding of the research field before you go in, and make sure you’re enthusiastic about the position. Good luck.
