There are definitely research opportunities. On campus, there are a lot of professors who are very happy to have undergrads come work for them. In my experience (in physics), professors have been very approachable and excited to have undergrads work for them. My friends in chemistry also have been involved in research, some with professors in the chemistry department, others in Materials (with the MRL). They’ve spoken very highly of their professors as well, and one of them has just gotten her fifth scholarly paper accepted for publication. Off campus, there are a number of start up companies that sometimes hire UCSB students. I’m not sure about chemistry in particular, but a lot of my physics friends have gotten part time jobs or full time jobs (after graduation) with them. There is also some money available for undergraduate research. The RISE scholarship pays hourly for a year of research through the MRL, SURF grants for College of Creative Studies students ([College of Creative Studies, UC Santa Barbara](http://www.ccs.ucsb.edu/)) pay for full-time summer research, and URCA grants help pay the costs of your project. I just read that “the campus each year awards about $200,000 in research grants to undergraduates.” ([UCSB Press Release: "UCSB Students, Faculty Member Receive Chancellor’s Research Awards "](<a href=“Public Affairs & Communications | Institutional Advancement”>Public Affairs & Communications | Institutional Advancement))
