How hard is it to obtain research if you are in Civil Engineering? compared to UC Berkley?
How hard is it to obtain research if you are in Computer Engineering? compared to UC Berkley?
Any personal experiences?

I am assuming that because USC is less competitive academically and has a higher teacher to student ratio, Ii should be much easier to acquire research at USC. However, if I am aiming for a high tier graduate school, will it be much harder to get in because my research would only be defined by quantity not quality?

BTW, How difficult would it be to transfer from Civil Engineering to Computer Science on the first day of school? I am hoping that I can take summer school classes and decide then on my major.

Thanks for any help.

hoping to get some feedback on this. thanks.

I saw this one yesterday and, with all my might, resisted responding. But here it is again. Bleh.

The only feedback I can come up with is:

1) If you think USC is not “academically competitive” and does not do “quality” research, it probably would be best to attend elsewhere.

2) If you are hoping to be offered research opportunities at UCB, you really should learn how to spell the name of the university.

I should sign off College Confidential for a while. I’m getting surly. Sorry.

Best wishes in “UC Berkeley”,… but before that please take some classes concerning the following terms:

“Tactless:” Lacking or exhibiting a lack of tact; bluntly inconsiderate; unthinking, careless

“Inconsiderate” - lacking regard for the rights or feelings of others

“Undiplomatic” - Lacking sensitivity and skill in dealing with others: brash, clumsy, gauche, impolitic, indelicate, maladroit, tactless, unpolitic, untactful. See ability/inability, courtesy/discourtesy

It will help you in your future…

Getting research opportunities depends not only on your knowledge and grades, but also on your interpersonal skills, especially interactions with professors. One can only hope that professors at both these schools have the good fortune to be out of the office when you come knocking.

And I don’t think there’s many people at all, and certainly not on these forums, that could tell you from personal experience whether getting research as a current undergrad is more difficult at USC or “Berkley”. After all, they would had had to attend both schools as a recent undergrad and applied for (and presumably gotten) undergrad research.

Please think before you post.

Constructive advice: It will help you in your future…I know you are excited with the process of comparing universities and you are young and you are learning how to interact in life. However, please read your posting and think what is wrong with it…or how could you have asked the same questions without demeaning either university.

Best wishes again…no bad feelings.

All college,
You mentioned aiming for a highly ranked graduate school. If you did mean in the field of engineering USC’s Viterbi was ranked 7th in the nation (Tied with Cal Tech) in the 2010 U.S. News rankings.

For undergraduates Viterbi is home to some of the most advanced academic facilities in the country. It has over 30 research centers across disciplines, hundreds of labs and other programs.

One of the newer buildings is Tutor Hall. It is home to state-of-the-art, cross disciplinary research. Research areas include Information Technology, Robotics, Biotechnology and Nanotechnology. The IMSC has a dynamic Entertainment of the Future laboratory and a cutting edge audio research lab along with the CREATE–the first university center of excellence funded by the U.S Dept. of Homeland Security.

Viterbi is also the home of the Biomimetic Microelectronic Systems Center. It is a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center. USC is one of only four universities with TWO NSF funded engineering research centers.

Other noted centers in Viterbi are the Center for Intractive Smart Oilfield Technologies, Tsunami Research Center, Center for Robotics and Embedded Systems, Keck Center for Photonic Technology, Combustion Physics Laboratory and the renowned Stevens Institute for Innovation.

The U.S. Dept.of Energy has awarded Viterbi $12.5 Million as the site of an Energy Frontier Research Center, EFRC. It will be directed by P. Daniel Dapkus.

“It promises to revolutionize the way we utilize energy in our lives and work. It reaffirms USC as a national leader in the critical area of energy.”

…just a bit more information

Alumnus Charles Bolden, M.S. Systems, has been named the new leader of NASA. He has been a former astronaut, combat pilot, Marine Corps. major general and veteran space shuttle commander. His B. S. was from the U.S. Naval Academy.
