What exactly is research triangle park? I understand that the area between NC State, UNC, and Duke is the research triangle park and that it contains many company stakes but is there a concrete building, premise, or tangible setting that the rtp has? I’m slightly confused in this regard. All clarification is greatly valued!
Its an area of NC that has lots of high tech, pharma, biotech, etc companies. There is no specific city that contains RTP. However it is a hotbed of jobs/internship/etc that is ripe for Dukies to take advantage of.
Over fifty years ago, leaders in the Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill area of North Carolina determined that – principally, due to the presence of Duke, UNC-CH and NCSU – ideal economic growth could be significantly stimulated by creating a major area for high-technology, white-collar, research-founded industries. Critically, this included the large investments required to fund the substantial infrastructure necessary to support such public and private enterprises. Several thousand acres, of primarily rolling woodlands, because the Research Triangle Park (so named, because the three cities (and their universities) formed a triangle).
The web has copious information available, but you may want to start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Research_Triangle_Park. To indicate the successes of this amazingly farsighted decision, for several decades the R-D-CH area has had the greatest percentage of residing advanced degree holders in the United States. In addition, the greatly improved “fundamental character” of these cities and their burgeoning suburbs (e.g., Cary) has remarkable enhanced life throughout the Triangle. To respond specifically to your question, there is no single “concrete building,” however there is a designated geographic area and a premise – I’d summarize it as “creating a substantial “zone” that both capitalizes and enhances the intellectual resources in the region, created by the presence of three major research universities.”
I hope this is helpful.
Thanks so much to you both!
