Research?

Is the University of Maryland a “research” university? Meaning can an undergrad do research outside of the classroom in their respective field?

Yes. Many professors are doing research and I know many who are researching next semester on campus.

When my DD and I attended various Maryland Marquee Day presentations this past fall, we were continually told that research opportunities are available for undergrads. I hope this is true.

^Don’t worry - I get emails every morning about new research opportunities. The emailed ones are generally off-campus and all you have to do is sign up your email on a list-serv. On-campus ones are less subtle, you’ll have to approach a professor whose research you’re interested in and see if they’re willing to have an undergrad help.

Should have specified earlier - I know a lot of students* who are researching with professors next semester.

Does being invited to Marquee Day increase chance of admission? Does it have any bearing on admission to scholars/honors?

I am not sure. I suspect it does. Attendance is recorded into their registration database. When I went to the Scholars session, they had a sign-up sheet for those who are interested in the Scholars program. I don’t recall a sign-up sheet for Honors. I think attending MMD helps in demonstrating interest in either program. I am not sure how much it helps, but it doesn’t seem to hurt.

Coming in late, but agree w/ the poster above on research possibilities at UMD. I’m sure that there are more for some majors than others, but there are a lot of opportunities both on campus and off. Establishing rapport with professors, especially in your area of interest, early and often is a great way to start out at UMD. There is also an undergraduate research office at UMD that posts opportunities, especially on campus. It may be non-paying to begin with, but once you establish yourself as a good student and hard worker, it has been the experience of both of my D’s that it certainly can lead to paying gigs (both on and off campus).

@terpitude - I was there with my son. I don’t think attending the event has any bearing on admission to scholars/honors just because after the big joint session in the morning, afternoon was college specific sessions held concurrently (i.e., scholars/honors group was one of many smaller groups they had.) So, by design, you couldn’t attend more than one session unless you had someone to cover different sessions for you. President Loh gave an interesting “we want you here” speech. It was a fun day but not sure how much bearing it really has. I wouldn’t worry too much. Good luck.
