Residence Halls and Residential Colleges?

What are some of the general differences between these two types of living quarters such as socially, financially, etc

Thanks

socially, res colleges are supposed to do a lot more stuff within the dorm as well as have lots of events sponsored by the residential college board (musicals, museum visits, baseball and basketball games, other stuff)

residential colleges were introduced in the 1970s as a way to extend the intellectual environment outside of the classroom and into residences (haha i’ve obviously been studying my tour guide manual). there are 11 colleges, all but 2 focusing on a certain theme such as International Studies, Commerce/Industry, Engineering, Communications, etc. res colleges sponsor many more events within the dorm, like bver100 noted. you earn points by participating in these events and if you have enough points you will be guaranteed housing and have priority in choosing rooms. this is cool because it means you skip the housing lottery process entirely.

Does it cost any more money to reside in a residential college?

No, except Slivka is slightly more expensive since the facilities are all newer, I think.

actually i think the res college might have a small social dues fee? i’m not sure if res halls also have those, they might be included into your housing.

because its possible to non-res (ie be a part of the dorm, earn pts, etc without living there) thats where “extra money” may come from. depending on the res college, it might be 30-60/quarter?
