Residence on Fifth

I’m considering living in Residence on Fifth because of all that I’ve heard about it, but I’m not entirely sure about some of the details. The rooms have “kitchenettes” but what exactly does that entail? Is that just like a sink and a counter-top or is there a range/oven combo? I’ve heard that a lot of people in Rez save money on food by cooking in their rooms, so I assume there are ovens.

Also, I’m concerned about the “efficiency” rooms without the kitchens. The Residence on Fifth doesn’t seem worth the extra $1200 if I have to live in the smaller rooms without a kitchen or sitting area. Is there any way I can tell them to place me in a different dorm if I’m going to end up in one of those rooms?

I’m ED, so I paid my deposit fairly early. What are the chances that I’ll even get into Rez?

I live in the Rez.

A kitchenette includes an almost-full-sized fridge, a sink, a countertop, an electric range with 2 burners, and a bunch of shelf/cabinet space. There are no ovens, although there is an oven in the third floor community kitchen. I’m able to cook all the meals I need on just the stovetop, however, so you should be fine. You could bring a microwave oven if you so preferred.

The efficiency rooms do have kitchens. It’s just that instead of there being separate rooms for bedroom and living area, both of those areas are combined into one bigger room. It still has all the same furniture as the regular apartments, just without the dividing wall in between the living area and bedroom.

The Rez is fairly unknown, so people still tend to clamor for Mudge/Morewood because they don’t know how nice the Rez rooms are. If you paid your deposit early and if you put down the Rez as your first choice for housing, you’ll end up housed there for sure unless something weird happens with the housing assignments.

Ok. I couldn’t see the kitchen area on the floor plan of the Efficiency Rooms before. I’m guessing it’s the little area adjoining the bathroom wall.

Anyway, how’s this 10 minute walk people complain about. It doesn’t look that bad to me, especially since Rez seems to be about equidistant from MCS and Heinz and not too far from the Engineering building. I’m enrolled as a physics major and I plan to take Intro to ECE next year and as many humanities as I can, so it actually looks optimal to me. Does being away from the nexus of campus make socializing more difficult or do you get along just fine?

The walk is not a problem at all unless it’s really cold, in which case it can be a bit icey. There’s even a shortcut that makes it so that the buildings on the academic quad (Doherty, Wean, Baker/Porter, and Hamerschlag) are less of a walk from the Rez than they are from Mudge.
