When you get the housing forms this spring, you will find that you need to answer two short essays about why you are interested in the residential colleges. You should take this seriously if that’s where you want to live. They are apparently read by the faculty masters of the residential colleges and then a decision is made. You rank them, up to five, in order of your preference. (You can only rank five total, even if you mix your request as residential college vs. regular dorms.) The residential colleges vary wildly in number of students, from under 100 to close to 300. I don’t think that everyone who wants to live in one gets in, but expect that most do. Meet the deadline for turning your request in!

thanks for the info!

Just for reference, 3 of my 5 housing choices were res colleges and I did not get into any of them. Lots of students apply to res colleges and many are placed in other dorms.

so i think i’ve always kind of known what residential colleges are, but i’ve never just flat out asked, so i think i’ll do it now.

what are they?

they’re for a bunch of kids with a common interest or something, right? if that is right, which ones are there at northwestern? are they really clique-ish? etc.

illinoisgirl324, i looked on the north by northwestern dorm guide and saw a mix of 5 res colleges and dorms that I would love to live in, so now I’m not too concerned about which dorm I would be placed in.

For all other prospective freshman go to north by northwestern dorm guide!
